File011: The Ship

The Ship is an episode of Words At War that first aired in July of 1943. It tells the tale of the H.M.S. Artemis as it fights the Italian Navy off the coast of Malta.

The H.M.S. Penelope, on which this story is based, was commissioned in November of 1936 and served the Royal Navy until sunk by a German submarine in February 1944. 415 sailors, including the captain, were lost with the ship. There were 206 survivors.
